Part of the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex, Denton is home to two state universities, including the University of North Texas, the third largest university in the state. The over 45,000 students and the large intellectual community help define Denton as a unique and diverse creative community. There is a respected music and art culture here that stands apart from those in Dallas and Fort Worth. The University of North Texas’s College of Music was home to the first Jazz Studies program in the nation, and today the college draws musicians from all over the world to study traditional and experimental music. Recently, some of the most exciting music happening in Denton is in the independent music scene. If independent music is not to your liking, every spring Denton hosts the Denton Arts & Jazz Festival, which draws over 200,000 annually for live music, food and crafts. Ask your Denton TX Bed and Breakfast innkeepers where they go when they want to hear live music.
There is more to Denton than music, however. Denton has a rich history. Denton County was created shortly after Texas abandoned its dream of being an independent Republic. Denton was named after John B. Denton, a pioneer preacher, lawyer and Indian fighter, who was killed by the Indians in 1841. He was not the last. Comanche and Kiowa raiders from Indian Territory raided the town on moonlit nights through August 1874. The impressive Denton Courthouse-on-the-Square, built in 1895, houses interesting exhibits on Denton’s past. It is almost certain that your Denton Texas Bed and Breakfast hosts will be well versed in local lore and history. Pull up a chair and relax.
