Head west out of Austin or north out of San Antonio to find a relaxing Fredericksburg TX Bed and Breakfast. Fredericksburg is one of several towns in the area that was settled by German immigrants in the mid 19th century. The town site was selected at the confluence of two streams, four miles north of the Pedernales River. The original settlers were drawn to the abundance of water, stone and timber in the region, and they laid out their new town like the villages along the Rhine in their native Germany. The Pioneer Museum Complex features a stone house and store built in 1849, and authentic pioneer artifacts. Make sure to visit the Admiral Nimitz Museum State Historical Park soon after you arrive at your Fredericksburg Texas Bed and Breakfast, as it will provide a free map of nearby historic sites. Fort Martin Scott Historical Site, dating from circa 1849-53, is owned and operated by the Historical Society; it is a place steeped in 1800s living history, where visitors can participate in the Knife and Tomahawk Competition, sample coffee and biscuits around a chuckwagon, and help build a fence.

For something completely different, visit the Fredericksburg Butterfly Ranch & Habitat, which specializes in native Texas butterflies and plants.
