The second largest city in Texas, San Antonio got its name from Spanish explorers who stopped in the area on the feast day of Saint Antonio back in 1691. In 1716, the Spanish began construction fort along the river. After being moved twice, the fort took up permanent residence on the Plaza de Armas, and the nearby mission San Antonio ended up on Alamo Plaza. The Battle of the Alamo took place in 1836, when 4,000 Mexican troops besieged the old mission for 13 days, eventually killing all inside. The oft-heard cry "Remember the Alamo" rallied Texans as they fought for their independence, which they won in 1837. Your San Antonio Texas Bed and Breakfast is sure to have a selection of books on the fascinating history of this region.
These days, San Antonio has the largest medical research and care center in South Texas. It is also home to one of the largest military concentrations in the United States. Yet business and history are not the only things going for San Antonio, as your San Antonio TX Bed and Breakfast innkeepers can tell you. Lively festivals draw thousands of people each year. Check out Fiesta San Antonio in mid April, when parades, feasts and performances saturate the city. Stay through early May, when the Texas Conjunto Festival showcases music that is a synthesis of Mexican and European traditions, as it has since its inception in the early 1900s. In Mid June, the Texas Folklife Festival features food, music, dance, and arts and crafts from the variety of cultures that shaped Texas.
Before you leave, ask your San Antonio Bed and Breakfast innkeepers to point you in the direction of the historic River Walk, which extends an impressive 2.5 miles and offers many choices for dining, shopping and entertainment. It is not to be missed.
