The region around Smithville in Central Texas has been inhabited for centuries. Indeed, artifacts have been found suggesting that early Native Americans lived here between 6,000 and 8,000 years ago. The town as it is today was not settled until about 1827, when folks started coming west in search of silver. Once the Taylor, Bastrop and Houston Railroad arrived in the 1880's, the town flourished as a rail town. As you wander through town on your way to and from your Smithville Texas Bed and Breakfast, be sure to admire the many Victorian homes and early 20th century brick buildings. Also take time to learn about transportation in the United States by visiting the Central Texas Museum of Automotive History and the Railroad Historical Park and Museum. Talk to your Smithville TX Bed and Breakfast innkeepers, who will be able to direct you to interesting spots favored by locals.

It should be noted that the secret it out -- Smithville has been discovered by Hollywood; the 1997 movie "Hope Floats" was filmed here, and more recently Brad Pitt and Sean Penn filmed "The Tree of Life". The hosts of your Smithville Bed and Breakfast may know which local restaurants the stars favor.
