2015 Christmas Festivities and Fun in Grapevine, TX

For many though, Christmas takes the cake! It is a season that brings people together, celebrates holiday cheer and being merry, and is just plain fun! There are still a few weeks until Christmas is upon us but for those of you who love this season and may be traveling through Texas, we have to make sure you know about Grapevine, TX, the true Christmas Capital of Texas!

From mid-November to January the Christmas season truly comes alive in Grapevine, TX. This charming city, about a half-hour northwest of Dallas is transformed with elaborate decorations, life-sized ice sculptures, magical displays, millions of lights, and more than 1400 events over 40 days. It is the perfect place to make special memories with your family and friends. Below is a list highlighting some of the spectacular events that will be going on:

Sky’s the Limit Balloon Spectacular – Gainesville, TX

We are sure if we polled a group of people we would hear everything from pumpkin spice lattes to fall color drives to fall football and pumpkin patches. If you live in or will be travelling near Gainesville, TX we can add something to your list: the Sky’s the Limit Balloon Spectacular!

Coming up October 30-November 1, 2015, this balloon spectacular will be held on the grounds of the Gainesville Municipal Airport. For you road trippers out there who may be in the area, Gainesville is just over an hour north of Dallas and about a half hour from Denton, TX. Crowds from all over north and central Texas will be there to enjoy the festivities. The weekend will begin at 4pm on Friday as 14 balloons fill up and take to the skies and live music hits the Sky Stage. The festival will continue throughout the weekend with balloon glows, competitions and rides, an airshow, delicious festival food, a host of vendors, children’s area, main stage entertainment, and much more.

Bigger and Better at the State Fair of Texas

State Fair of Texas“Go big or go home” is the mantra of many competitive athletes out there today but one could also say it fits to be the slogan behind the greatness of the State Fair of Texas. This state fair, that was actually started in 1886 believe it or not, has been put on almost every single year since its humble beginnings. If you have never experienced the best state fair in America, we highly encourage you to make your way over to Dallas, TX this fall!

Happening September 25th – October 18th, 2015, the State Fair of Texas will be offering a range of fantastic exhibits, incredible entertainment and services that are unrivaled by any annual fair in North America. It is nearly impossible to list every detail of this fair in one short article but we’ll highlight some crowd favorites bring people back each and every year:

More than 40 landscaping firms from the across the state have installed beautiful landscaping beds throughout the fairgrounds. Visitors can test drive a Corvette or Camaro at the Ride and Drive event, and you are close to other incredible local attractions such as the Children’s Aquarium at Fair Park, the Texas Discovery Gardens, the African American Museum, and the Music Hall. There are also 15 different shopping locations around the park so you can get a jumpstart on your Christmas list.

Big Summer Fun: Giants of the Jurassic at The Dallas Zoo

Giants of the Jurassic at The Dallas ZooWhat comes to mind when you think of something huge, gigantic, remarkable, impressive, and scary? We’re not sure about you but we think of dinosaurs! If you are looking for some big time summer fun and happen to be passing through or staying near Dallas, TX we encourage you to check out the Giants of the Jurassic exhibit at The Dallas Zoo.

This impressive and very popular exhibit open now until September 7, 2015, features more than 20 animatronic dinosaurs that roar and come to life before your very eyes—whether you are young or old, these creative works of art bring an experience you won’t forget. See the Tyrannosaurus Rex, Brachiosaurus,Stegosaurus,Triceratops,and many more. At Erth’s Dinosaur Zoo Live you will get to meet and interact with some of the most impressive life-like dinosaur puppets in a live theatrical performance. This 30-minute show happens four times a day, five days a week as part of the Jurassic exhibit. You can also take in DinoSOAR, a 20-minute interactive wildlife show that features a variety of different birds and mammals. Entrance to this spectacular exhibit is included with your zoo admission.

Get ready to snap some pictures with these larger than life creatures, learn about their features, habits, and habitats, and enjoy all that this zoo has to offer. Fast & Furious at Texas Motorplex in Ennis, TX

Race cars on a trackIf you have a need for speed and enjoy a fun crowd, some noise and a lot of excitement, you have landed on the right page. We love sharing with our bed and breakfast guests the fantastic finds, places to go, things to see, and fun to be had around Texas and the Motorplex in Ennis, TX is a must stop if you are near the area this summer.

The Texas Motorplex, just 40 miles south of downtown Dallas, TX, is a quarter-mile drag racing facility. It has won numerous “Track of the Year” awards from the National Hot Rod Association and it is the one and only all concrete race surface track in the United States. National records, speed milestones, championship titles are often broken and won here, making it an exciting place for fans—a fast and furious experience you won’t forget.

You don’t have to be a super fan or know all of the driver and car statistics to enjoy a day of fun at this motorplex. There are a myriad of events going on this summer that the whole family will enjoy including Free Fireworks Show on July 4, 2015, Instant Green Street Night on July 18, 2015, Fast Friday on July 24, 2015, Dragster Challenge on July 25, 2015, and much more.

A Glimpse Into Granbury, TX

Cowboy with a horse Whether it is on a commercial, billboard, or magazine cover, you can’t seem to escape an advertisement or article on what’s new in the world of technology. While it is exciting—scientists and inventors are coming up with incredible products each and every day that really make a positive impact on our society. It is important however to honor and cherish the past—the culture and heritage of the days of old that are the foundation for where we are today.

Granbury, TX is a quaint city in North Texas that has kept history alive. It is located about 35 miles southwest of Fort Worth was founded in 1887. Many of the buildings in the town’s original square are still there today as registered historic landmarks. Granbury is also located on the Brazos River, which is the longest river in Texas and happens to flow through the city. There is another beautiful long, narrow lake, Lake Granbury, which flows through the city as well. These areas of water provide great swimming, fishing, boating, and beach activities for the community and visitors.

This is a city where you will find exciting nightlife, gorgeous countryside vineyards, a vibrant arts scene, beautiful pastures of wildflowers, friendly people, and a relaxed, peaceful way of life. You can tour amazing Victorian homes, attend art shows and rodeos, golf, eat at some fantastic restaurants or catch a Broadway show at the Granbury Opera House. The city’s 4th of July weekend is known all around Texas and draws in over 50,000 people every year. You’ll find a car show, over 100 vendors, entertainment, performances, rodeo, parade, fireworks and more. It is a great event to attend if you have been planning a trip this summer.

Wildflower! Art & Music Festival – Richardson, TX

This can certainly happen in your car on your way home from work with your friends or family but when an epic music festival such as the Wildflower! Art & Music Festival happens, it is an experience you don’t want to miss.

The Wildflower! Festival is North Texas’ largest music festival. This award-winning event is celebrating its 23rd anniversary in 2015 and it just gets bigger and better every year. It started out as a small spring celebration and got its name for the wildflowers that blossom throughout the city. It quickly grew once headliner bands were brought in and now it brings in over 70,000 festivalgoers every year!

There are multiple performance stages that will host artists from all genres including pop, R&B, country, classic rock, folk, funk, and more. There is also a Kidz Korner, Art Guitar Auction, Performance Row, Battle of the Bands, Songwriting Contest, the Taste of Texas Food Garden, and so much more!

Fortunately, there are many great cities throughout Texas that have a myriad of thing to do that don’t cost a thing! If you have a spring or summer vacation coming up to Dallas, TX, we have gathered ten great things to do that will keep every penny IN your pocket!

  • Take advantage of visiting several museums that have no admission charge such as the Dallas Museum of Art, the African American Museum, and the Meadows Museum of Art.
  • The Pioneer Plaza Cattle Drive is a larger than life scene of over 70 bronze sculptures in front of the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center.
  • Take a tour around town on the free M-Line Trolley. They are restored, vintage-style trolleys that make stops at several areas of interest.
  • Check out the incredible collection of Japanese armor, helmets, artwork, weaponry, masks, and accessories at The Samurai Collection at The Ann & Gabriel Barbier-Mueller Museum.

  • Visit the lobby of the Children’s Medical Center of Dallas where you can view the largest permanent model train display in the country.

Scavenger Hunt Adventure in Dallas, TX

Have you ever tried one of those, “I Spy” Books where you scour each page for tiny items, often until your eyes go cross-eyed? It is definitely a challenge hunting for small objects within a picture in a book but what if you had to hunt for things around a city?

If you are up for trying something different and would love to see the city of Dallas, TX in a new way, we want to tell you about the Amazing Scavenger Hunt Adventure. There is so much to see and do in Dallas, TX such as the Arboretum & Botanical Gardens, the Sixth Floor Museum, the Dallas Museum of Art, the World Aquarium, plus all of the fantastic shopping and restaurants to try. This scavenger hunt though turns the city into a game board as you experience an Amazing Race type of challenge throughout the city.

You need a team of 2-5 people and a smart phone to make this race work. Using your smart phone to connect to a web-based Quest software, you will make your way all around the city while having to complete challenges and solve clues along the way. You will see the sights and learn all about the history of the city of Dallas during this interactive adventure. Visit important buildings and monuments and see where JFK was assassinated. It is one flat fee for your entire group and public transportation fare is extra should you choose to use it. You can play anytime of the day as long as there is still daylight, the hunt will take anywhere from 2 ½ – 3 ½ hours. If you have a larger group, this is a great way to enjoy some friendly competition!

At the end of a day of “adventuring,” there is nothing better than coming back to your own private home away from home. Holiday Fun at the Christkindl Market in Arlington, TX

The Texas Christkindl Market is a German American holiday market in Arlington, TX. It is an annual event that while only in its 4th year has become one of the most popular holiday events in the area. Created to mirror the traditional markets held throughout Germany during the holiday season, the Christkindl market is a family friendly place that offers authentic German cuisine and a myriad of arts, crafts, holiday gifts and entertainment to take in.

For the grand opening weekend starting November 28th, 2014, this market will get the entire community into the holiday spirit. This year, the opening day will have special hours of 5:00-9:00 pm and Saturday, November 29th you will be treated to two incredible performances by multi-Grammy Award winning group, Brave Combo at 7pm and 8:15 pm. Other special events include Tarrant County College Day on December 6th, performance by Daryl Dodd on December 13th, and performances by the Tejas Brothers on December 20th at 7:00pm and 8:15pm.There will be several family events going on such as the Holly Jolly Christmas variety show at the Marionette Theatre, children’s lantern parades, and Santa Haus. If you have that hard-to-buy-for family member, you just may find the perfect item as you browse rare European fabrics, beautiful handmade gifts, and unique ornaments. As you stroll along you will be hard-pressed to pass by the vendors offering German delicacies like brats, goulash, potato pancakes, and gingerbread.
