Granbury, in North Texas, is a lovely little town about thirty miles southwest of Forth Worth. The town square boasts many well-maintained historic buildings such as the Hood County Courthouse (pictured below) and the Granbury Opera House. Granbury is thought by some to have “The Best Town Square in Texas”.
Indeed, history buffs will find much to do in and around Granbury. The town has a rich tradition of folktales and legends, and remains committed to sharing them. There is a Walking Driving Tour that leads visitors to sites of historical significance throughout Granbury; it reveals interesting stories about some of the town’s most prominent residents: Davy Crockett, Jesse James and John Wilkes Booth.
Acton State Historic Site, five miles outside of Granbury, is the burial site of Davy Crockett’s wife Elizabeth, and members of the Crockett family. Jesse James, an American folk hero of a different kind, is said to be buried in the Granbury Cemetery.
There is also much to do in Granbury aside from admiring the architecture and absorbing the history. The Opera House presents top-notch productions. The Granbury City Beach offers a warm, sandy place to walk and play. And there are several good golf courses.
The downtown square has many great shops, featuring everything from fine wine to fashionable clothing to antiques. If you are looking for an easy place to shop for the holidays, consider coming here.
